Day Two: The
Diving Begins!
OCTOBER 23, 2005 - The first
day of diving on any live aboard is always a day
of excitement! As usual, the captain starts us
off in a beautiful, but easy diving location -
ratcheting up the excitement level as the trip
continues. Each day, we were able to get in up
to five dives, including a night dive.
Dive Spots:
GRAND BOGUE - Turneffe Islands
CHAIN WALL - Lighthouse Reef
Belize diving is among some of the best
in the world. The water is clear and warm, and
the reef structure is home to an impressive number
of creatures. We started our adventure at the
east side of the Turneffe Islands at a spot called
Grand Bogue. After a brief check-out from the
staff, we were free to begin exploring the exciting
world of Belize diving. Even on this first dive,
we began to capture some great shots! See below.

After a hearty lunch, the boat motored to our
next destination, about 20 miles to the east at
Lighthouse Reef - Chain Wall. We spent the rest
of the day here. As we exited the water after
our fourth dive, the sun began to set in the west,
creating one of the most memorable sunsets ever.
After dinner, we prepared for our first night
dive.

NIGHT DIVE: Night diving in
Belize is amazing. For those that have never encountered
a tarpon, they can be startling. As big as a shark,
with silvery steel scales, they are night predators
that are attracted by dive lights. They swoop
out of the inky darkness to gobble up the small
fish illuminated by your dive light. Their ultra-reflective
eyes light up like miniature torches, shooting
back a orange glowing beam back into the water.
Simply fascinating to observe. They will scare
the heck out of you the first time you encounter
them!
